Lesson 48: Come unto Christ – Scriptures and Quotes

In General Conference, April, 1986, President Benson said, "The Book of Mormon will change your life"
 Reading 1 – Mormon 7:2-5
Reading 2 – President Joseph F. Smith wrote: "The ancient prophets speak of 'entering into God's rest'; what does it mean? To my mind, it means entering into the knowledge and love of God, having faith in his purpose and in his plan, to such an extent that we know we are right, and that we are not hunting for something else, we are not disturbed by every wind of doctrine, or by the cunning and craftiness of men who lie in wait to deceive." (Gospel Doctrine, p58)
Reading 3 – Moroni 7:6-13
Reading 4 - President Marion G. Romney wrote: "About a quarter of a century ago Sister Romney and I moved into a ward in which they were just beginning to build a meetinghouse. The size of the contribution the bishop thought I ought to contribute rather staggered me. I thought it was at least twice as much as he should have asked. However, I had just been called to a rather high Church position, so I said, 'Well, I will pay it, Bishop, but I will have to pay it in installments because I don't have the money.' And so I began to pay. And I paid and paid until I was down to about the last three payments, when, as is my habit, I was reading The Book of Mormon, and came to the scripture which said:
"'...if a man...giveth a gift ...grudgingly; wherefore it is counted unto him the same as if he had retained the gift; wherefore he is counted evil before God.'
"This shocked me because I was out about a thousand dollars. Well, I went on and paid the three installments I had promised to pay, and then I paid several more installments to convince the Lord that I had done it with the right attitude." (Relief Society Magazine, Feb 1968)
Reading 5 – Moroni 7:14-17
Reading 6 – Bible Dictionary definition of Light of Christ
Moroni 7:19-20
Reading 7 – Moroni 7:25-26
Moroni 7:40-43
Reading 8 - Elder Bruce R. McConkie wrote:  "As used in the revelations, hope is the desire of faithful people to gain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God hereafter.... Faith and hope are inseparable. Hope enables us to have faith in the first instance then because of faith that hope increases until salvation is gained." (Mormon Doctrine, p365-366)
Moroni 7:44-48
Reading 9 – Moroni 10:4-5
Reading 10 – Brother Daniel H. Ludlow has written: "When a person follows this divine formula, the results are certain: He will gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon. God cannot and does not lie, and his promises made through his prophets are sure. Therefore, any person who claims to have followed the various requirements but says he has not gained a testimony should check to see which step he has not followed faithfully or completely." (Ensign, Mar 1986)

Lesson 48: Come unto Christ - Study Guide

Moroni 7–8 contains teachings of Moroni’s father, Mormon. Moroni 10 contains Moroni’s final written testimony.
  • Mormon referred to the members of the Church as “peaceable followers of Christ” (Moroni 7:3). On what basis did Mormon make this judgment? (See Moroni 7:4–5.) How do we become “peaceable followers of Christ”?
Moroni closed his record with “a few words by way of exhortation” (Moroni 10:2). The word exhort means to advise or urge strongly. As you study Moroni 10, you may want to mark the word exhort each time it appears. Ponder the meaning and importance of Moroni’s exhortations in this chapter.
  • What did Moroni teach about spiritual gifts? (See Moroni 10:8–19.)
  • How does Moroni’s exhortation to “come unto Christ” reflect the entire message of the Book of Mormon? (Moroni 10:30, 32). In what specific ways has this year’s study of the Book of Mormon helped you come unto Christ?

Suggestion for Family Discussion

Bear your testimony of the Book of Mormon, and invite family members to do the same. Then read the following statement by President Ezra Taft Benson:
“The Book of Mormon is studied in our Sunday School and seminary classes every fourth year. This four-year pattern, however, must notbe followed by Church members in their personal and family study. We need to read daily from the pages of the book that will get a man ‘nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book’ (History of the Church, 4:461)” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1988, 3; orEnsign, Nov. 1988, 4).
Encourage family members to continue studying the Book of Mormon and sharing it with others.

Lesson 47- Scriptures and Quotes

Orson Hyde, speaking of Moroni, said:

In those early and perilous times, our men were few, and our resources limited. Poverty was among the most potent enemies we had to encounter; yet our arms were successful; and it may not be amiss to ask here, by whose power victory so often perched on our banner? It was by the agency of that same angel of God that appeared unto Joseph Smith, and revealed to him the history of the early inhabitants of this country, whose mounds, bones and remains of towns, cities and fortifications speak from the dust in the ears of the living with the voice of undeniable truth. This same angel presides over the destinies of America, and feels a lively interest in all our doings. He was in the camp of Washington; and, by an invisible hand, led on our fathers to conquest and victory; and all this to open and prepare the way for the Church and kingdom of God to be established on the western hemisphere, for the redemption of Israel and the salvation of the world.

This same angel was with Columbus, and gave him deep impressions, by dreams and by visions, respecting this New World. Trammelled by poverty and by an unpopular cause, yet his persevering and unyielding heart would not allow an obstacle in his way too great for him to overcome; and the angel of God helped him was with him on the stormy deep, calmed and troubled elements, and guided his frail vessel to the desired haven. Under the guardianship of this same angel, or Prince of America, have the United States grown, increased, and flourished, like the sturdy oak by the rivers of water (Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol.6, p.368).

Reading 1 – Moroni 1:1-4

Reading 2 – Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has said, speaking of the sacrament: “…every ordinance of the gospel focuses in one way or another on the atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, and surely that is why this particular ordinance with all its symbolism and imagery comes to us more readily and more repeatedly than any other in our life. It comes in what has been called ‘the most sacred, the most holy, of all the meetings of the Church’ (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 2:340).

“Perhaps we do not always attach that kind of meaning to our weekly sacramental service. How ‘sacred’ and how ‘holy’ is it? Do we see it as our passover, remembrance of our safety and deliverance and redemption?

“With so very much at stake, this ordinance commemorating our escape from the angel of darkness should be taken more seriously than it sometimes is. It should be a powerful, reverent, reflective moment. It should encourage spiritual feelings and impressions. As such it should not be rushed. It is not something to ‘get over’ so that the real purpose of a sacrament meeting can be pursued. This is the real purpose of the meeting. And everything that is said or sung or prayed in those services should be consistent with the grandeur of this sacred ordinance.” (Conference Report, Oct. 1995, “This Do in Remembrance of Me”)

Reading 3 – Moroni 4:3

Reading 4 – Elder Dallin H. Oaks has said, "Those who are found worthy to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ at the last day are described in the great revelations recorded in the ninety-third and seventy-sixth sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. Here the Savior revealed to Joseph Smith that in due time, if we keep the commandments of God, we can receive the ‘fulness’ of the Father. (D&C 93:19-20.) Here the Savior bears record that ‘all those who are begotten through me are partakers of the glory of the [Father], and are the church of the Firstborn.’ (D&C 93:22.) ‘They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things. … Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods’ who ‘shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever.’ (D&C 76:55, 58, 62.) ‘And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.’ (John 17:3; see also D&C 88:4-5.) This is the ultimate significance of taking upon us the name of Jesus Christ." (Conference Report, May 1985 Ensign, “Taking Upon Us the Name of Jesus Christ”)

Reading 5 – Elder Joseph E. Taylor said, “You partake of the ordinance in order that His Spirit may be with you.  You cannot have spiritual life without it.  You show me a person who from Sabbath to Sabbath, month to month, and year to year, absents himself from these sacred meetings of the Latter-day Saints, and I will show you a man from whom the Spirit of the Lord will be taken and he will become spiritually dead.  Do you believe it?  It seems to lay at the very foundation of your spiritual life and mine.” (Collected Discourses 1886-1898, ed. by Brian Stuy, vol. 5, Joseph E. Taylor, Nov. 18, 1894)

Reading 6 – Moroni 6:1-4

Reading 7 - President Gordon B. Hinckley said: “With the ever increasing number of converts, we must make an increasingly substantial effort to assist them as they find their way. Every one of them needs three things: a friend, a responsibility, and nurturing with ‘the good word of God’ (Moroni 6:4)” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1997, 66; or Ensign, May 1997, 47).

Lesson 47: To Keep Them in the Right Way

Lesson 47: To Keep Them in the Right Way Book of Mormon Class Member Study Guide, (1999), 28–29

•Why are chapters Moroni 2–5 of the book of Moroni important for our day? How does it strengthen you to see the same ordinances present in different dispensations of the Lord’s Church?

•What covenants do we make through the sacrament? (See Moroni 4:3; 5:2.) What are we promised in return? How do you feel when you have partaken of the sacrament reverently and worthily?

•After people were baptized and had received the gift of the Holy Ghost, “they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken” (Moroni 6:4). Why were their names recorded? (See Moroni 6:4.) In what ways can you contribute to the Church’s efforts to see that both long-time and new members are “remembered and nourished by the good word of God”?

Suggestion for Family Discussion

If family members are new converts, discuss what it was like to join the Church. Allow family members to talk about things they liked about joining the Church and about challenges they faced when they joined the Church. If family members have been members of the Church for a long time, ask them to talk about how they might feel if they came to church for the first time.

Have a family member read the following counsel from President Gordon B. Hinckley:
“With the ever increasing number of converts, we must make an increasingly substantial effort to assist them as they find their way. Every one of them needs three things: a friend, a responsibility, and nurturing with ‘the good word of God’ (Moroni 6:4)” (in Conference Report, April 1997, 66; or Ensign, May 1997, 47).
•What can we do to follow this counsel?

Lesson 41: “He Did Expound All Things unto Them” – Scriptures and Quotes

Reading 1 – 3 Nephi 23:1-3

Reading 2 – Elder Henry B. Eyring said: “We treasure the word of God not only by reading the words of the scriptures but by studying them. We may be nourished more by pondering a few words, allowing the Holy Ghost to make them treasures to us, than by passing quickly and superficially over whole chapters of scripture” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1997, 115; or Ensign, Nov. 1997, 84).

Reading 3 - President Spencer W. Kimball said: “I have had many people ask me through the years, ‘When do you think we will get the balance of the Book of Mormon records?’ And I have said, ‘How many in the congregation would like to read the sealed portion of the plates?’ And almost always there is a 100-percent response. And then I ask the same congregation, ‘How many of you have read the part that has been opened to us?’ And there are many who have not read the Book of Mormon, the unsealed portion. We are quite often looking for the spectacular, the unobtainable. I have found many people who want to live the higher laws when they do not live the lower laws” (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 531–32).

Reading 4 – 3 Nephi 21:22-29

Reading 5 - President Ezra Taft Benson said:  “The prophets likened latter-day Zion to a great tent encompassing the earth. That tent was supported by cords fastened to stakes. Those stakes, of course, are various geographical organizations spread out over the earth. Presently, Israel is being gathered to the various stakes of Zion. …   “… Stakes are a defense for the Saints from enemies both seen and unseen. The defense is direction provided through priesthood channels that strengthens testimony and promotes family solidarity and individual righteousness” (“Strengthen Thy Stakes,” Ensign, Jan. 1991, 2, 4).

Reading 6 – 3 Nephi 23:9-11

Reading 7 - Elder Neal A. Maxwell:  "Over time there has occurred what has been called 'the dilution of Christianity from within.' This has resulted not only in a diminishing regard for Christ on the part of a number of theologians but also in their discounting the resurrection, as Bultmann expressed it, as merely 'a symbolic expression for the renewal of life for the disciples.' Once again, the supernal importance of the 'other books' of scripture is evident: they reinforce the reality of resurrection. Especially is this the effect of the Book of Mormon's additional 'gospel,' 3 Nephi, with its report of the visitation of and instruction by the resurrected Jesus. The resurrection of many others also occurred and, by Jesus' pointed instruction, was written into the record, doubtless with our age in mind." (Not My Will, But Thine, pp27-28)

Lesson 39: “Behold, My Joy Is Full” – Scriptures and Quotes

Reading 1 – 3 Nephi 17:1-3

Reading 2 - Joseph Smith History 1:11-12

Reading 3 – Doctrine and Covenants 138:1, 11

Reading 3 – Elder J. Golden Kimball said, "Think of God. How many of us think of God thirty minutes out of twenty-four hours? There is not one out of five hundred that actually thinks of God and his Son Jesus Christ thirty minutes a day. I do; but the first thing I know, my mind wanders off on something else." (CR, Apr 1926)

Reading 4 – 3 Nephi 17:11-21

Reading 5 – 3 Nephi 18:1-11

Reading 6 – 3 Nephi 18:24-25

Reading 7 – 3 Nephi 19:10-14

Reading 8 – Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has written: “As Christ had not yet appeared to them for this second day (and because the Father and Son could not permanently be with them—or us—in a telestial world), the next best companionship came from that member of the Godhead who can be with mortals permanently—the Holy Ghost. In their ministry these newly called apostles could not always have the daily, physical presence of the Savior with them. Nevertheless, because they were to lead the Church of Jesus Christ in righteousness and be witnesses of his name throughout the Nephite world, they would surely need the prompting, the protection, the revelation, and the comfort of that One who is the spiritual extension and telestial representative of the Father and the Son.

“In our own time the Prophet Joseph Smith was asked wherein The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differed from other religions of the day. He replied that the distinction lay in ‘the gift of the Holy Ghost’ and that all other considerations ‘were contained in that gift.’  In light of these experiences—ancient or modern, Old World or New—perhaps all disciples of Christ, all members of his true Church, should pray for the influence and guidance of the Holy Ghost as that heavenly gift ‘which they most desire.’” (Christ And The New Covenant, p. 278)

Reading 9 – Elder Neal A. Maxwell wrote, "How vital it is that each of us come to have a personal witness that we are led by living prophets. President Lee observed that someone once said, 'That person is not truly converted until he sees the power of God resting upon the leaders of this church, and until it goes down into his heart like fire.' President Lee said this observation was 'absolutely true,' adding that 'until the members of this church have that conviction that they are being led in the right way, and they have a conviction that these men of God are men who are inspired and have been properly appointed by the hand of God, they are not truly converted.' (Neal A. Maxwell, Things As They Really Are, p.70 p.71)

Lesson Outline - Lesson 38: “Old Things Are Done Away, and All Things Have Become New”

Lesson 38: “Old Things Are Done Away, and All Things Have Become New”, Book of Mormon Gospel Doctrine Teacher’s Manual, (1999),168

1)      Introduction
a)      3 Nephi 12-15
b)      Includes Sermon on the Mount
i)        We have 3 versions
(1)   Bible
(2)   Book of Mormon
(3)   Joseph Smith Translation
(4)   Some differences between these versions
(a)    Given to different groups of people
(i)     "More righteous part" of the Nephites
(ii)   The Book of Mormon version makes clear when Christ is speaking only to his 12 Disciples and when He is speaking to the larger group
(b)   Given at different times
(i)     Before and after Christ's resurrection
(c)    Given at different locations
(i)     Book of Mormon – Sermon at the Temple
(5)   Different writers/translators
(a)    Book of Mormon – Mormon – a prophet
(i)     Translated by Joseph Smith – a prophet
(b)   JST – Joseph Smith – a prophet
(c)    Matthew – Uncertain who may have contributed to original account
(i)     Uncertain who translated from Hebrew to Greek to English
(ii)   Luke has a similar sermon - Luke 6: 20-49
1.      Luke 6:20 -  20 ¶ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
2.      Matthew 5:3 - 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

c)      Among the most valuable words ever written
i)        READ – Erastus Snow said, “[The Book of Mormon] makes clear many dark sayings of the Jewish Scriptures, as they have come down to us. It sheds a flood of light over the Bible; it contains the key of knowledge and understanding; and it is more precious than all the works of modern times, and is worth more. (Journal of Discourses, Vol.23, p.300 p.301, Erastus Snow, October 7, 1882)”
d)      Reading 1 - President Harold B. Lee wrote: "Christ came not only into the world to make an atonement for the sins of mankind but to set an example before the world of the standard of perfection of God's law and of obedience to the Father. In his Sermon on the Mount the Master has given us somewhat of a revelation of his own character, which was perfect, or what might be said to be an 'autobiography, every syllable of which he had written down in deeds,' and in so doing has given us a blueprint for our own lives." (Stand Ye In Holy Places, pp341-342)
2)      Beatitudes
a)      Reading 2 – Beatitudes –Bible Dictionary – page 620
Name given to certain declarations of blessedness in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5: 3-11, cf. Luke 6: 20-22). They describe certain elements that go to form the refined and spiritual character, and all of which will be present whenever that character exists in its perfection. Rather than being isolated statements, the Beatitudes are interrelated and progressive in their arrangement. A more comprehensive and accurate listing is found in 3 Ne. 12 and JST Matt. 5, where a greater spiritual emphasis is given.
i)        Beatitudes are a description of a happy life

b)      Book of Mormon contains an introduction to this sermon
i)        Reading 3 – 3 Nephi 12:1-2
1 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost; therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am.
2 And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.
ii)      ASK – To whom was this sermon directed?
(1)   12 Nephite Disciples
(2)   Those who were covenant members of the Church
(a)    Those who “come down into the depths of humility” and are baptized and have received the Holy Ghost.
iii)    READ - Daniel Ludlow has written: "This more complete version of the sermon changes the entire emphasis of the Beatitudes.  Here the Savior is not saying 'you are more blessed if you mourn than if you do not mourn,' but he is saying 'If you are called upon to mourn, then you are blessed if you come unto me, and are baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, etc.' Thus, if you do truly hunger and thirst after righteousness, you shall be filled 'with the Holy Ghost.' (A Companion to Your Study of the Book of Mormon, p263)
c)      Note also that each of the Beatitudes in the Sermon at the Temple is preceded with the term “And”, which ties them together – we are expected to do all of them, not just one or two.
d)      READ - Verse 3 Yea, blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
i)        Poor in spirit = Humility
ii)      Key change in Book of Mormon is “who come unto me”
iii)    Reading 4 – Moroni 10:32-33
32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.
33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.
iv)    Coming unto Christ is key
(1)   Many of the requirements of the Sermon on the Mount/Temple seem impossible.  They are impossible unless we come unto Christ.
(2)   Later, we will hear Christ command us to be perfect.
(3)   “Blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me” – 3 Nephi 12:3
(4)   Moroni says – “Come unto Christ and be perfected in him. . . . by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ . . . . ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ
(5)   We cannot be perfect, we cannot approach God, without the Atonement of Christ.
v)      Christ gives us the Beatitudes because he is the only way we can live these important commandments.
(1)   READ – “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6)

e)      Mourning
i)        READ - Verse 4 And again, blessed are all they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
ii)      ASK – Is the Savior saying that it is good to mourn for anything bad?  How does this tie into the idea that the Beatitudes are a description for a happy life?
iii)    Tie together with the previous – “Blessed are the poor in spirit – the humble – who come unto me” and the preface talking about baptism
iv)    If I am humble and preparing for baptism, what am I mourning about? – My sins – being sorry for my sins is a vital part of repentance
(1)   Only if I repent of my sins can I have a happy life

f)       Meekness
i)        READ - Verse 5 And blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
ii)      Meekness is vital to dealing with the great sin of pride.
iii)    Reading 5 -  Elder Neal A. Maxwell has written, “In daily discipleship, the many ways to express selfishness are matched by many ways to avoid it. Meekness is the real cure, for it does not merely mask selfishness but dissolves it! Smaller steps could include asking ourselves inwardly before undertaking an important action, Whose needs am I really trying to meet? Or in significant moments of self expression, we can first count to 10. Such thoughtful filtering can multiply our offering by 10 as a mesh of reflective meekness filters out destructive and effusive ego.” (Neal A. Maxwell, "Repent of [Our] Selfishness" Ensign, May 1999, p. 23, emphasis added)
iv)    READ - President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Meekness implies a spirit of gratitude as opposed to an attitude of self-sufficiency, an acknowledgment of a greater power beyond oneself, a recognition of God, and an acceptance of his commandments” (“With All Thy Getting Get Understanding,” Ensign, Aug. 1988, 3–4).
g)      Hunger and Thirst After Righteousness
i)        READ - Verse 6 And blessed are all they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.
(1)   Spiritual hunger that causes us to turn back to Christ
(2)   ASK – Do we have this hunger for righteousness?  Is it as powerful as our physical hunger is?

h)      Merciful
i)        READ – Verse 7 And blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
ii)      Once we are forgiven by Christ, He asks us to forgive others
i)        Pure in Heart
i)        Verse 8 And blessed are all the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
ii)      Our humility and our repentance and our meekness and our longing for righteousness and our mercy will, through the Atonement of Christ make us pure.
iii)    READ - D&C 93:1 -  1 Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am;
iv)    Reading 6 – Hugh Nibley has written, “Zion is the pure in heart, the pure in heart, not merely the pure in appearance. It is not a society or religion of forms and observances, of pious gestures and precious mannerisms: it is strictly a condition of the heart. Above all, Zion is pure, which means ‘not mixed with any impurities, unalloyed’; it is all Zion and nothing else. “(Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Vol.9, Ch.2, p.26)

3)      Perfection
a)      The commandment to be perfect – Verse 48 – causes a lot of people great concern because they may view it as impossible to obey.
b)      See if you can see a difference between these verses in the Sermon on the Mount and the Sermon at the Temple
i)        Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
ii)      Sermon at the Temple - 3 Nephi 12:48 Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
iii)    Differences
(1)   Christ is resurrected and has completed his earthly ministry, so now He is like his Father – perfect
(2)   “I would that ye should” is added in the Book of Mormon version – implies that this is something we move toward with the help of Christ and His Atonement
c)      Reading 7 - President Brigham Young explained that "we all occupy diversified stations in the world and in the kingdom of God. Those who do right, and seek the glory of the Father in heaven, whether they can do little or much, if they do the very best they know how, they are perfect .... 'Be ye as perfect as ye can,' for that is all we can do .... To be as perfect as we possibly can according to our knowledge is to be just as perfect as our father in Heaven is. He cannot be any more perfect than he knows how, any more than we. When we are doing as well as we know in the sphere and station which we occupy here we are justified." (Journal of Discourses, 2:129-130)
d)      Reading 8 - Joseph Fielding McConkie & Robert L. Millet have written:  "We are perfect when we are whole, fully formed, finished. The word finished is most important here. We cannot through discipline and self-will be perfect in the sense that we are finished. We cannot conquer the flesh, overcome the trials and tribulations and sins of this world, on our own. We become finished only in and through Christ. Moroni explained that the Saints of God are ‘continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith’ (Moroni 6:4, italics added). In short, we become perfect, fully formed, finished, in Christ (Moroni 10:32). His grace is a divinely given enabling power, a sacred source of strength which enables us to accomplish what we could never accomplish, worlds without end, on our own. We become perfect in Christ to the degree that we trust perfectly in his infinite ability to make of us, now unworthy creatures, persons capable of and comfortable with celestial society. In speaking of that celestial glory, the revelation attests: ‘These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood’ (D&C 76:69, italics added)." (Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon, 4:78)
e)      READ - President Joseph Fielding Smith observed,
"I believe the Lord meant just what he said: that we should be perfect, as our Father in heaven is perfect. That will not come all at once, but line upon line, and precept upon precept, example upon example, and even then not as long as we live in this mortal life, for we will have to go even beyond the grave before we reach that perfection and shall be like God.
"But here we lay the foundation. Here is where we are taught these simple truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ, in this probationary state, to prepare us for that perfection. It is our duty to be better today than we were yesterday, and better tomorrow than we are today. Why? Because...if we are keeping the commandments of the Lord, we are on that road to perfection, and that can only come through obedience and the desire in our hearts to overcome the world. It is the duty of every man to try to be like his Eternal Father." (Doctrines of Salvation, 2:18-19.)
4)      Salt and Light
a)      READ – 3 Nephi 12:13 – 13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.
i)        Salt is a powerful symbol for those familiar with the Jewish temple
ii)      Reading 9 - Elder Bruce R. McConkie has written:  “Among the ancient Hebrews salt … was used as a preservative, in seasoning food, and in all animal sacrifices. (Lev. 2:13; Ezek. 43:24; Mark 9:49–50. [Leviticus 2:13; Ezekiel 43:24]) So essential was it to the sacrificial ordinance that it was the symbol of the covenant made between God and His people in connection with that sacred performance. (Lev. 2:13; Num. 18:19; 2 Chron. 13:5.)  Accordingly, our Lord’s statement, made first to the Jews and then to that other great body of Hebrews, the Nephites, that they had power ‘to be the salt of the earth,’ takes on great significance. … They had power, in other words, to be the seasoning, savoring, preserving influence in the world, the influence which would bring peace and blessings to all others” (Mormon Doctrine, 2nd ed. [1966], 667–68).
b)      Light
i)        READ – 3 Nephi 12:14-16
14 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.
  15 Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house;
16 Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
ii)      Reading 10 – Doctrine and Covenants 101:39-40, Doctrine and Covenants 103:9-10
D&C 101 -   39 When men are called unto mine everlasting gospel, and covenant with an everlasting covenant, they are accounted as the salt of the earth and the savor of men;
40 They are called to be the savor of men; therefore, if that salt of the earth lose its savor, behold, it is thenceforth good for nothing only to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

D&C 103  9 For they were set to be a light unto the world, and to be the saviors of men;
10 And inasmuch as they are not the saviors of men, they are as salt that has lost its savor, and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.
iii)    Savor = Savior
c)      READ - In a Mission President's Seminar (June 1999), President Gordon B. Hinckley observed, "Our message is so imperative, when you stop to think that the salvation, the eternal salvation of the world, rests upon the shoulders of this church. When all is said and done, if the world is going to be saved, we have to do it. There is no escaping from that. No other people in the history of the world have received the kind of mandate that we have received. We are responsible for all who have lived on the earth. That involves family history and temple work. We are responsible for all who now live upon the earth, and that involves missionary work. And we are going to be responsible for all who will yet live upon the earth."

5)      Calling Us to a Higher Level
a)      In the Sermon on the Mount and the Sermon at the Temple
i)        Christ explains what sort of person He is
ii)      Christ asks us to become like Him through His Atonement
iii)    Christ asks us to help Him in His great work to save all mankind
(1)   We will want to do this if we have become like Christ
b)      Christ is calling us to a higher level
c)      READ - C.S. Lewis said, The command Be ye perfect is not idealistic gas. Nor is it a command to do the impossible. He is going to make us into creatures that can obey that command. He said (in the Bible) that we were “gods” and He is going to make good his words. If we let Him — for we can prevent Him, if we choose — He will make the feeblest and filthiest of us into a god or goddess, dazzling, radiant, immortal creature, pulsating all through with such energy and joy and wisdom and love as we cannot now imagine, a bright stainless mirror which reflects back to God perfectly . . . His own boundless power and delight and goodness. The process will be long and in parts very painful; but that is what we are in for. Nothing less. He meant what he said. Lesson 38: “Old Things Are Done Away, and All Things Have Become New” – Scriptures and Quotes

Reading 1 - President Harold B.

Reading 2 – Beatitudes –Bible Dictionary – page 620

Reading 3 – 3 Nephi 12:1-2

Reading 4 – Moroni 10:32-33

Reading 5 -  Elder Neal A.

Reading 6 – Hugh Nibley has written, “Zion is the pure in heart, the pure in heart, not merely the pure in appearance.

Reading 7 - President Brigham Young explained that "we all occupy diversified stations in the world and in the kingdom of God.

Reading 8 - Joseph Fielding McConkie & Robert L.

Reading 9 - Elder Bruce R.

Lesson 36 Outline: On the Morrow Come I into the World

Lesson 36: On the Morrow Come I into the World
3 Nephi 1–7

1)      Introduction
a)      Last lesson before the events that announce the death of Christ and His appearance to the Nephites
i)        AD 1 – AD 33
b)      This part of Mormon’s record is directed specifically to our times
i)        We do not know when the Savior will return
ii)      Do know that we are in the last dispensation, the last days before the Savior will return to the earth.
c)      Reading 1 – President Ezra Taft Benson said: “[I]n the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for preparing for the Second Coming. A major portion of the book centers on the few decades just prior to Christ’s coming to America. By careful study of that time period, we can determine why some were destroyed in the terrible judgments that preceded His coming and what brought others to stand at the temple in the land of Bountiful and thrust their hands into the wounds of His hands and feet. . . . Can anyone doubt that this book was meant for us and that in it we find great power, great comfort, and great protection?
2)      Waiting for the Signs
a)      Samuel had given a specific prophesy
i)        READ – Helaman 14:2-7
2 And behold, he said unto them: Behold, I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name.
3 And behold, this will I give unto you for a sign at the time of his coming; for behold, there shall be great lights in heaven, insomuch that in the night before he cometh there shall be no darkness, insomuch that it shall appear unto man as if it was day.
4 Therefore, there shall be one day and a night and a day, as if it were one day and there were no night; and this shall be unto you for a sign; for ye shall know of the rising of the sun and also of its setting; therefore they shall know of a surety that there shall be two days and a night; nevertheless the night shall not be darkened; and it shall be the night before he is born.
5 And behold, there shall a new star arise, such an one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you.
6 And behold this is not all, there shall be many signs and wonders in heaven.
7 And it shall come to pass that ye shall all be amazed, and wonder, insomuch that ye shall fall to the earth.
b)      ASK – The people had received a very specific prophesy of the signs of time when Christ came and when these would appear – 5 years.  Did this mean that they should have been able to wait calmly until the signs appeared?

c)      Reading 2 – 3 Nephi 1:1-8
1 Now it came to pass that the *ninety and first year had passed away and it was six hundred years from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem; and it was in the year that Lachoneus was the chief judge and the governor over the land.
2 And Nephi, the son of Helaman, had departed out of the land of Zarahemla, giving charge unto his son Nephi, who was his eldest son, concerning the plates of brass, and all the records which had been kept, and all those things which had been kept sacred from the departure of Lehi out of Jerusalem.
3 Then he departed out of the land, and whither he went, no man knoweth; and his son Nephi did keep the records in his stead, yea, the record of this people.
4 And it came to pass that in the commencement of the ninety and second year, behold, the prophecies of the prophets began to be fulfilled more fully; for there began to be greater signs and greater miracles wrought among the people.
5 But there were some who began to say that the time was past for the words to be fulfilled, which were spoken by Samuel, the Lamanite.
6 And they began to rejoice over their brethren, saying: Behold the time is past, and the words of Samuel are not fulfilled; therefore, your joy and your faith concerning this thing hath been vain.
7 And it came to pass that they did make a great uproar throughout the land; and the people who believed began to be very sorrowful, lest by any means those things which had been spoken might not come to pass.
8 But behold, they did watch steadfastly for that day and that night and that day which should be as one day as if there were no night, that they might know that their faith had not been vain.
i)        Verse 2 - Nephi, the son of Helaman, had departed out of the land of Zarahemla –
(1)   The prophet they knew well, Nephi – the great grandson of Alma the Younger – is gone
ii)      Verse 4 -  in the commencement of the ninety and second year, behold, the prophecies of the prophets began to be fulfilled more fully; for there began to be greater signs and greater miracles wrought among the people.
(1)   Not the specific signs Samuel had prophesied, but certainly signs that he had described generally and could reassure the faithful
(2)   90th year – about 1 BC – footnote to Helaman 16
(3)   92nd year – would be the fifth year after Samuel gave his prophesy

iii)    Verse 5-7 beginning of Doubts
“  5 But there were some who began to say that the time was past for the words to be fulfilled, which were spoken by Samuel, the Lamanite.
6 And they began to rejoice over their brethren, saying: Behold the time is past, and the words of Samuel are not fulfilled; therefore, your joy and your faith concerning this thing hath been vain.
7 And it came to pass that they did make a great uproar throughout the land”
d)     Response of Faithful Nephites
i)        Verse 7 – “the people who believed began to be very sorrowful, lest by any means those things which had been spoken might not come to pass”
ii)      Can imagine the Nephites each evening as the sun began to go down.  Went outside to watch, to see if it would get dark or not
iii)    Whenever it got dark, unbelievers would taunt them for their belief
iv)    Wondered, “has God forgotten us?”
v)      Verse 8 – “they did watch steadfastly for that day and that night and that day which should be as one day as if there were no night, that they might know that their faith had not been vain”
e)      ASK – Do we sometimes wish that the Brethren would be more specific in their prophesies and tell us more about the time when Christ will return?
i)        Samuel’s prophesy was very specific, but it didn’t keep some Nephites from apostatizing and it didn’t spare the faithful Nephites from difficulty

f)       Things got worse.
i)        READ 3 Nephi 1:9 - 9 Now it came to pass that there was a day set apart by the unbelievers, that all those who believed in those traditions should be put to death except the sign should come to pass, which had been given by Samuel the prophet.
g)      The Prophet Nephi’s Response
i)        READ 3 Nephi 1:11 – “11 And it came to pass that he [Nephi the prophet] went out and bowed himself down upon the earth, and cried mightily to his God in behalf of his people, yea, those who were about to be destroyed because of their faith in the tradition of their fathers.”
ii)      The Lord told Nephi that he would come into the world on that night
h)      Faith in the Lord includes faith in the Lord’s timing and in the messages, including the level of detail, he gives to His prophets
i)        ASK – Does the Lord ever put us in a position in which it is unnecessary for us to exercise faith?
i)        Samuel could have prophesied that the signs would come before the expiration of six years
3)      Samuel’s Prophesies Fulfilled
a)      Reading 3 – 3 Nephi 1:15-21
15 And it came to pass that the words which came unto Nephi were fulfilled, according as they had been spoken; for behold, at the going down of the sun there was no darkness; and the people began to be astonished because there was no darkness when the night came.
16 And there were many, who had not believed the words of the prophets, who fell to the earth and became as if they were dead, for they knew that the great plan of destruction which they had laid for those who believed in the words of the prophets had been frustrated; for the sign which had been given was already at hand.
17 And they began to know that the Son of God must shortly appear; yea, in fine, all the people upon the face of the whole earth from the west to the east, both in the land north and in the land south, were so exceedingly astonished that they fell to the earth.
18 For they knew that the prophets had testified of these things for many years, and that the sign which had been given was already at hand; and they began to fear because of their iniquity and their unbelief.
19 And it came to pass that there was no darkness in all that night, but it was as light as though it was mid-day. And it came to pass that the sun did rise in the morning again, according to its proper order; and they knew that it was the day that the Lord should be born, because of the sign which had been given.
20 And it had come to pass, yea, all things, every whit, according to the words of the prophets.
21 And it came to pass also that a new star did appear, according to the word.
b)       Fulfillment of Samuel’s Prophesy
i)        5 Years – Helaman 14:2
(1)   Fulfillment – ninety and second year – 3 Nephi 1:4
ii)      Two days and a night with no darkness – Helman 14:3-4
(1)   Fulfillment - 3 Nephi 1:15, 19
iii)    A new star arises – Helman 14:5
(1)   Fulfillment - 3 Nephi 1:21
iv)    Many signs – Helaman 14:6
(1)   Fulfillment - Had appeared before the night with no darkness – 3 Nephi 1:4
v)      Everyone will fall to the earth – Helaman 14:7
(1)   Fulfillment - 3 Nephi 1:16

4)      Signs Mean Different Things to the Faithful and the Unfaithful
a)      Reading 5 – Bruce McConkie has written, "Gifts of the Spirit which the Lord bestows upon those who believe and obey the gospel of Christ are called signs. That is, their receipt stands as an evidence or sign of the presence of that faith which results from believing the truth. Signs are wonders and miracles; they always and invariably are manifest to and among the faithful saint" (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 73).
b)      Reading 1A – Doctrine and Covenants 45:39-40
39 And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me shall be looking forth for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming of the Son of Man.
40 And they shall see signs and wonders, for they shall be shown forth in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath.

c)      Reading 4 - The Book of Mormon Institute manual notes, "Signs flow from faith and, indeed, are a product of it. They strengthen the faithful but produce faith only in the spiritually responsive. Therefore, their chief purpose is not to produce faith, but to reward it. It is not an uncommon thing in scripture to see the most marvelous signs and evidences of God's power ignored or rationalized away by those without faith."
d)     ASK – When those who are not faithful demand some sort of sign, are they doing so because they desire to believe or because they desire an excuse not to believe?
i)        Korihor, the Antichrist, asked for a sign and was struck dumb.  Was he really seeking a reason to believe?  Alma 30

e)      All Nephites and Lamanites saw the extraordinary signs accompanying the birth of Christ.
i)        How long did the effects manage to keep the people righteous?
(1)   Christ was born in the 92nd year
(2)   Reading 6 – 3 Nephi 2:1-3
1 And it came to pass that thus passed away the *ninety and fifth year also, and the people began to forget those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began to be less and less astonished at a sign or a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be hard in their hearts, and blind in their minds, and began to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen—
2 Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil, to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; and thus did Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing.
3 And it came to pass that the people began to wax strong in wickedness and abominations; and they did not believe that there should be any more signs or wonders given; and Satan did go about, leading away the hearts of the people, tempting them and causing them that they should do great wickedness in the land.
5)      Rise of the Gadiantons
a)      Note – New year numbering among the Nephites – instead of the year of the judges, they marked time by the year since the birth of Christ
b)      Reading 7 - 3 Nephi 2:11–13, 17–19
11 And it came to pass in the *thirteenth year there began to be wars and contentions throughout all the land; for the Gadianton robbers had become so numerous, and did slay so many of the people, and did lay waste so many cities, and did spread so much death and carnage throughout the land, that it became expedient that all the people, both the Nephites and the Lamanites, should take up arms against them.
12 Therefore, all the Lamanites who had become converted unto the Lord did unite with their brethren, the Nephites, and were compelled, for the safety of their lives and their women and their children, to take up arms against those Gadianton robbers, yea, and also to maintain their rights, and the privileges of their church and of their worship, and their freedom and their liberty.
13 And it came to pass that before this thirteenth year had passed away the Nephites were threatened with utter destruction because of this war, which had become exceedingly sore.

17 And it came to pass in the commencement of the fourteenth year, the war between the robbers and the people of Nephi did continue and did become exceedingly sore; nevertheless, the people of Nephi did gain some advantage of the robbers, insomuch that they did drive them back out of their lands into the mountains and into their secret places.
18 And thus ended the fourteenth year. And in the *fifteenth year they did come forth against the people of Nephi; and because of the wickedness of the people of Nephi, and their many contentions and dissensions, the Gadianton robbers did gain many advantages over them.
19 And thus ended the fifteenth year, and thus were the people in a state of many afflictions; and the sword of destruction did hang over them, insomuch that they were about to be smitten down by it, and this because of their iniquity.
c)      When the Nephites are disobedient, the Gadiantons gain power.
6)      Letter to Lachoneus from Giddianhi, Leader of Gadiantons
a)      Sophisticated propaganda
b)      Look for tactics of Satan in this letter – liken it unto our time
c)      Reading 8 – 3 Nephi 3:1-10
1 And now it came to pass that in the *sixteenth year from the coming of Christ, Lachoneus, the governor of the land, received an epistle from the leader and the governor of this band of robbers; and these were the words which were written, saying:
2 Lachoneus, most noble and chief governor of the land, behold, I write this epistle unto you, and do give unto you exceedingly great praise because of your firmness, and also the firmness of your people, [FLATTERY] in maintaining that which ye suppose to be your right and liberty [SOWING DOUBT] ; yea, ye do stand well, as if ye were supported by the hand of a god, [SARCASM ABOUT GOD] in the defence of your liberty, and your property, and your country, or that which ye do call so. [SOWING DOUBT]
3 And it seemeth a pity unto me, [HYPOCRISY] most noble Lachoneus, that ye should be so foolish and vain as to suppose that ye can stand against so many brave men who are at my command, who do now at this time stand in their arms, and do await with great anxiety for the word—Go down upon the Nephites and destroy them.
4 And I, knowing of their unconquerable spirit, having proved them in the field of battle, and knowing of their everlasting hatred towards you because of the many wrongs which ye have done unto them, [180 DEGREES FROM TRUTH] therefore if they should come down against you they would visit you with utter destruction.
5 Therefore I have written this epistle, sealing it with mine own hand, feeling for your welfare, [HYPOCRISY] because of your firmness in that which ye believe to be right, [SOWING DOUBT] and your noble spirit in the field of battle.
6 Therefore I write unto you, desiring that ye would yield up unto this my people, your cities, your lands, and your possessions, rather than that they should visit you with the sword and that destruction should come upon you.
7 Or in other words, yield yourselves up unto us, and unite with us and become acquainted with our secret works, and become our brethren that ye may be like unto us—not our slaves, but our brethren and partners of all our substance. [LIE – ALL WHO SERVE SATAN ARE SLAVES.]
8 And behold, I swear unto you, [QUASI-RELIGIOUS] if ye will do this, with an oath, ye shall not be destroyed; but if ye will not do this, I swear unto you with an oath, that on the morrow month I will command that my armies shall come down against you, and they shall not stay their hand and shall spare not, but shall slay you, and shall let fall the sword upon you even until ye shall become extinct.
9 And behold, I am Giddianhi; and I am the governor of this the secret society of Gadianton; which society and the works thereof I know to be good; [180 DEGREES FROM TRUTH] and they are of ancient date [GOING BACK TO CAIN] and they have been handed down unto us. [BY WHOM? SATAN]
10 And I write this epistle unto you, Lachoneus, and I hope that ye will deliver up your lands and your possessions, without the shedding of blood, that this my people may recover their rights and government, [HYPOCRISY, 180 DEGREES FROM TRUTH] who have dissented away from you because of your wickedness in retaining from them their rights of government, [HYPOCRISY, 180 DEGREES FROM TRUTH] and except ye do this, I will avenge their wrongs. I am Giddianhi.

7)      Response of Lachnoeus and Righteous Nephites/Lamanites
a)      Not Afraid - READ – 3 Nephi 3:12 – “Lachoneus, the governor, was a just man, and could not be frightened by the demands and the threatenings of a robber”
b)      Cry to the Lord - READ – 3 Nephi 3:12 – “he [Lachnoeus] did cause that his people should cry unto the Lord for strength against the time that the robbers should come down against them”
c)      Gather together for protection – READ – 3 Nephi 3:13 “13 Yea, he sent a proclamation among all the people, that they should gather together their women, and their children, their flocks and their herds, and all their substance, save it were their land, unto one place.”
d)     Built fortifications – READ – 3 Nephi 3:14 “  14 And he caused that fortifications should be built round about them”

e)      Placed Guards – READ – 3 Nephi 3:14 “he caused that armies, both of the Nephites and of the Lamanites, or of all them who were numbered among the Nephites, should be placed as guards round about to watch them, and to guard them from the robbers day and night.”
f)       Called on people to repent – READ -  Nephi 3:15 – “15 Yea, he said unto them: As the Lord liveth, except ye repent of all your iniquities, and cry unto the Lord, ye will in nowise be delivered out of the hands of those Gadianton robbers.”
g)      People Repented – 3 Nephi 3:16 READ – “16 And so great and marvelous were the words and prophecies of Lachoneus that they did cause fear to come upon all the people; and they did exert themselves in their might to do according to the words of Lachoneus.”

h)      Appointed righteous captain to command armies – READ – 3 Nephi 3:19 – “19 Now it was the custom among all the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (save it were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of revelation and also prophecy; therefore, this Gidgiddoni was a great prophet among them, as also was the chief judge.”
i)        People wanted to go to the mountains to attack the Gadiantons where they lived.  Gidgoddoni’s prophetic response – READ – 3 Nephi 3:21 “But Gidgiddoni saith unto them: The Lord forbid; for if we should go up against them the Lord would deliver us into their hands; therefore we will prepare ourselves in the center of our lands, and we will gather all our armies together, and we will not go against them, but we will wait till they shall come against us; therefore as the Lord liveth, if we do this he will deliver them into our hands.
j)     The people obeyed their prophet/leader – READ 3 Nephi 3:25-26 “ 25 And they did fortify themselves against their enemies; and they did dwell in one land, and in one body, and they did fear the words which had been spoken by Lachoneus, insomuch that they did repent of all their sins; and they did put up their prayers unto the Lord their God, that he would deliver them in the time that their enemies should come down against them to battle.
26 And they were exceedingly sorrowful because of their enemies. And Gidgiddoni did cause that they should make weapons of war of every kind, and they should be strong with armor, and with shields, and with bucklers, after the manner of his instruction. ”

8)      Results of Lachneous’ Preparation for Battle
a)      Nephites/Lamanites had taken all of their food with them
b)      18th Year - First series of battles – Gadiantons came up in a direct assault and were beaten

b)      READ – 3 Nephi 6:10-13, 15
  10 But it came to pass in the *twenty and ninth year there began to be some disputings among the people; and some were lifted up unto pride and boastings because of their exceedingly great riches, yea, even unto great persecutions;
11 For there were many merchants in the land, and also many lawyers, and many officers.
12 And the people began to be distinguished by ranks, according to their riches and their chances for learning; yea, some were ignorant because of their poverty, and others did receive great learning because of their riches.
13 Some were lifted up in pride, and others were exceedingly humble; some did return railing for railing, while others would receive railing and persecution and all manner of afflictions, and would not turn and revile again, but were humble and penitent before God.

15 Now the cause of this iniquity of the people was this—Satan had great power, unto the stirring up of the people to do all manner of iniquity, and to the puffing them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power, and authority, and riches, and the vain things of the world.
